MENTAL HARBOR

Depression

Depression is a serious mental illness characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, dejection, hopelessness, and loss of interest. It affects not only mood, but also thinking, behavior, and physical functions.

Typical symptoms of depression include:

  • Persistent sadness or dejection
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in previous activities
  • Sleep disturbances (insomnia or increased sleeping)
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigability
  • Reduced concentration or attention span
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Untreated depression can lead to long-term impairment or quality of life, social problems, and other mental and physical health problems.

Depression can occur episodically, with periods of severe symptoms followed by periods of improvement. In some cases, however, depression can be chronic and persist for a longer period of time.

The causes of depression are varied and can include genetic, biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Stressful life events such as loss, trauma, relationship problems or work-related stress can also contribute to depression.
