Eating disorders

Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that affect a person’s eating behavior and can have negative effects on physical and mental health. The most common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder (BED).

Typical symptoms of eating disorders can include:

  • A distorted perception of one’s own body and weight
  • Excessive worry about food, calories or weight
  • Loss of control over eating behavior (e.g. overeating or refusing food)
  • Frequent vomiting or misusing laxatives (in bulimia nervosa)
  • Hiding eating behavior or food restriction
  • Physical signs such as weight loss, dehydration or dental problems

Eating disorders can have serious effects on physical health, including heart problems, kidney failure, gastrointestinal problems and osteoporosis. They can also lead to mental health problems such as depression, anxiety disorders or self-harm.

Eating disorders can have a chronic course and lead to long-term health problems if left untreated. Early intervention and comprehensive treatment are important to avoid complications.

The causes of eating disorders are varied and can include genetic, biological, psychological and environmental factors. Pressure from society, media or peer groups and traumatic experiences can also contribute to eating disorders.
