Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a mental illness in which sufferers have obsessive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to recurrent and unwanted actions or rituals (compulsions). These compulsions can severely interfere with daily life and cause significant distress.

Typical symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder may include:

  • Recurrent, unwanted thoughts, images, or impulses that cause anxiety or discomfort
  • Compulsive actions or rituals that are designed to relieve anxiety or discomfort but often have little or no real benefit
  • The inability to control the obsessive thoughts or actions, even when aware that they are unreasonable or excessive
  • Spending time and energy pursuing the compulsions, which can lead to limitations in daily life

Obsessive-compulsive disorder can have a chronic course and tend to worsen over time if appropriate treatment is not provided. Early access to support and development of coping strategies are important to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

Treatment

Treatment for OCD typically involves a combination of psychotherapeutic interventions, cognitive behavioral therapy, medication, and support groups when appropriate. The focus is on controlling the obsessive thoughts and actions and developing healthier coping mechanisms.

At Mental Harbor, we offer comprehensive treatment for OCD that aims to understand the underlying causes and develop appropriate coping strategies. Our therapy approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, and medication treatment. Our experienced team is on hand to help you control your obsessive thoughts and actions and live a balanced life.

In addition to these specialized services, we recognize that sometimes there is a need to simply “switch off” and find a place to retreat from the stresses of everyday life. Mental Harbor offers such a sanctuary – a place where you can experience rest and renewal through “tailored” stress reduction programs, mindfulness training, and wellness-oriented activities such as yoga and meditation.
